I left a career in marine biology to teach surfing. Then I discovered that what I was really teaching was presence — the ocean demands your full attention or it humbles you. I combined my scientific understanding of the sea with yoga and mindfulness to create retreats where the Atlantic is the primary teacher.
I spent six years studying ocean currents at the University of Gothenburg. I could explain wave mechanics with equations, but I could not explain why being in the water made me feel more alive than anything else. I moved to Ericeira, Portugal in 2020 — initially to study the marine reserve. Instead, I started teaching surf lessons and noticed something: people who came out of the water were different. Calmer. More present. More honest. I trained in yoga, took an MBSR course, and built a program that uses the ocean as a mindfulness tool. Not metaphorically — literally. Wave timing teaches breath regulation. Duck-diving teaches surrender. Sitting on the board waiting for a set teaches patience.
I host retreats because I watched hundreds of people come out of the ocean transformed — even if they could not stand up on a board. The surfing is not the point. The ocean is the point.
My retreats combine morning yoga, daily surf sessions, and evening mindfulness. But the real curriculum is the Atlantic. It teaches patience, humility, and presence better than any instructor.
Whether you have questions about an upcoming retreat or want to discuss something specific — I'd love to hear from you.
